Introduction
Kannur,The Land of Ageless Charm was the capital of Kolathiri
kings. The spices of Kannur were mentioned in the travelogue by Marco polo's
Indian Diary. Kannur became a famous trade centre with the arrival of Vasco-
Da- Gama in the 15th century. Kannur which is also known as Cannanore is one
of the important coastal town of kerala. For a very long time its luring its
suitors by its historical importance and natural beauty.
Attractions
Thalasseri Fort (22 km from Kannur)
The East India company this fort in 1708, with the main aim or controlling
the western coastal area.This square fort stands on a rocky cliff, on the
Thelichery beach. The fort has a grand gate and a light house. Beside these
one can find Brennen cemetery,St. Rosario Church and the Sub collector's
bungalow.
St. Angelo Fort
This
fort was built in oder to defend attacks of the British. This fort at
present is being supervised by the Archaeological Survey of India.This
see-facing fort gives as excellent view of the Arabian Sea.
Payyambalam Beach
This wide beach is around 2 km Away form the Kannur. It has beautify by the
beach garden which is very close to it,The mother and child
sculpture by Kanayi Kunhiramani is an attractive feature of this beach
garden. One part of this garden is Purely attributed to children.
Gundert Bungalow (20km from Kannur)
This bungalow which is around 20 km from main Kannur was the resident of
Dr; Herman Gundert ,the revered German Missionary, scholar,lexicographer who
lived in this bungalow for 20 years. It is situated near Thalasseri town on
the national high way at Illikunnu hills.
Dharmadam Island (100 meters away from the mainland at
Dharmadam)
This Sea beach is beautiful. In Summer there is no excess heat and Sea-wind
keeps this place cool. This is a small two hectare spread Island. Just 8 Km
far from Thalasseri is a must watch place for the travellers.
How to reach there
Air : The Mangalore airport is 170kms north of Kannur.
But its nearest airport is Karipur which is about 93 km south.
Rail : 2hr train journey form Kazhikode to Kannur. It is
an important depot of southern railways. All major trains those are going
North through the Konkan stop at Kannur.
Road : It is linked with Mysore by road. It has an
excellent road transport system which connects Kannur to all the major towns
of South India.
