water of the lake runs into the mainland making a labyrinth of lagoons,
brooks, canals and waterways. The backwater houses a variety of species of
both fauna and flora. They are rich with marine life namely the exclusive
'Kumarakom Karimeen' (pearl spotted fish), Konju (tiger prawns), Njandu
(crabs), Chemeen (prawns) and many more.

Kumarakom bird Sanctuary
A 14-acre bird sanctuary, is situated on the eastern banks of Vembanand
river. An avian place comprising different kinds of birds like herons,
egrets, darters, teals, waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, water duck and the migratory
Siberian cranes.
Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls
Located just 2 kms from Kumarakom, this is believed to be a very beautiful
and enjoyable spot . Make a trip to these waterfalls to mingle with nature
at its best.
Pathiramanal
An island on backwaters making a wonderful homage to the migratory birds
coming from various parts of the world. Surrounded by Vembanad river, this
place is only accessible by boat.
Vaikom
Situated 40 kms from Kottayam, this place is well-known for housing Shiva
temple. The temple is extremely popular for its traditional art performance
and an elephant pageant.
